the jewel in The Crown

It was a bit like déjà vu this past weekend when we headed up the M6 to Wetheral near Carlisle for a weekend in the Crown Hotel where I used to stay in when I was working at Chapelcross…. It is such a cosy, friendly, comfortable place so it was a pleasure to be back. Stella was made most welcome there too with a dog bed laid out and a couple of biscuits waiting for her too.

The purpose of the visit was a little get together Dave had arranged for the Capenhurst crew. Fred and Barbara were there and Robert and Andy came up too. On Saturday we went to Talkin’ Tarn for a little wander around the water and some ice cream which was followed by a walk along the river in Wetheral. After all these exertions, we met in the bar at the Crown and had a lovely meal together.

On Sunday we headed out early to Carlisle train station and took the train through some amazing countryside along the Carlisle to Settle Line to Dent. Stella liked it best on the train when she could see out the window and also when the train conductor made a massive fuss of her. She wasn’t so sure about the tunnels we went through though but her reaction to them was quite amusing. The journey was just over an hour and was a really nice start to the day. From Dent we walked about 7 miles to Ribblehead and the amazing viaduct where we caught the train back. Of course, I took a few pictures along the way.

The excursion was followed by another 3 course meal in the Crown – oh my. I really liked the Ginger Grouse (alcoholic ginger beer) they were serving and will be keeping my eyes open for that in the future.

After our 3rd cooked breakfast on Monday morning, we headed back home to spend the rest of the bank holiday getting sorted and relaxing while watching the rain fall outside. We enjoyed the weekend away and the opportunity to catch up with everyone. Although I see less of them than I’d like, it makes you really appreciate the time you do spend together.

And now to focus this week on attempting to undo the excesses of the weekend!
